Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
