The English and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
